My father was a Navy fighter pilot in the Korean war and was squadron leader. He flew the Panther off carriers. His squadron was sent to flew a mission over enemy territory to find and destroy a munitions train. Flying along straffing the train, a box car lid flew off and fired anti aircraft guns. Before his eyes they blew up his wing man and best friend. My father pulled his plane up, rolled over and dove out of the sun straight into antiaircraft fire, guns blazing. He blew up that boxcar and the whole train. For this he was awarded the Air Medal. After the war he married my mother and she walked with him under the Arch of Sabres. 10 months later I was born. My father was killed in a crash when I was a baby. Freedom is not free, as you know.When I was a little girl I found a shoe box in grandma's garage. I remember among other things it contained a shiny medal with a blue and yellow ribbon. Later I learned my dad had been awarded a medal but did not know the reason for it.Reading his military records sent by the Pentagon I learned it was the Air Medal. I wished I could find it again but no one in the family knew where it was. I was so glad to find your military veteran company still makes them. And there he is, like the eagle with two lightning bolts, diving down to blow up that munitions train.
